As a webmaster, you might have heard about Google Analytics too often right? I think it should be. Because everyone recommends to create google analytics account for website, blog or whatever is maintained on the web. You might ask why everyone should do this. So I am gonna cover its importance first and then guide you to setup google analytics.
Why Google Analytics is So Important For Your Website?
Every website tries to accomplish a goal. Suppose if you were a tech blogger, no doubt you will try to get your blog positioned among the top lists. Probably you will use different methods and test which one works perfect. To compare the effectiveness between your methods, you will obviously need an analytic program for your website.
Google Analytics is the best free website analytics program from my side as well as from the other’s sides. Probably it is popular mainly for being free, but I think it’s beyond that. It has so many advanced features, absolute analysis, asynchronous scripts that I couldn’t make time to test others. Above all, this service is being served by the internet sensation Google Inc.
So if you are interested to track everything on your website, you should go with Google Analytics without spending a penny.
Create Google Analytics Account
At first, you will need a google account to start using the analytic program. Simply go to www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount and register. If you already have an account, you don’t need to create a new one. You can use that already been created.
Now head over to www.google.com/analytics and sign in with the google account you made. Then you will be taken to the analytics sign up page. Click on the signup button.
Setup Google Analytics
Clicking the sign up button, you will see a page like below. Now you will need to add a website for completing the signup. So fill up the form with the correct website url and click get tracking code.
N.B: You will notice there are some check boxes below the page. It will ask for your permission if you are interested to associate your website info with other Google products, use it anonymously or get technical and specialist supports. These are your personal choices, but I might suggest you to check all.
Now you will see a script that needs to be placed on all the web pages you want to track. But where to place that code, right? The websites are built with various platforms. Some are custom made and some others are ready made. So there is no exact place.
So login to your site admin panel or load your your FTP with a client like Filezilla. You will be able to see all of your web pages. Simply right click on a web page and click edit. Now find </head> with shortcut Ctrl + F on your computer. Then paste your copied code before </head>. And that’s all. You have to repeat this for all your pages that you want to track.
There is another method of PHP based websites. They can create a new PHP file with the script. Then it could be called easily anywhere in the template. Suppose you have named the PHP file “googletracking.php”. You can call it with <?php include_once(“googletracking.php”) ?>. So it will reduce copy pasting the same script again, again and again.
If you placed it correctly, you will see tracking status changed to “Receiving Data”. After 4-5 hours from then, you will start to get your site reports.
